Timmons: Biden Championed Democracy, Delivered “Wins”
The NAM called on manufacturers in the U.S. to “work with the next president” to continue promoting democracy following the news that President Biden would not seek a second term.
What’s going on: “President Biden took office amid a global crisis. … Beginning with the early days of his transition, manufacturers were proud to continue working with the White House as our country mobilized to distribute vaccines and to reopen our economy,” NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons said on Sunday in a statement covered by Reuters (subscription) and LinkedIn News.
- Timmons listed the Biden administration’s manufacturing-critical accomplishments, including the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, domestic energy development incentives and initial permitting reforms.
United on democracy: In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Biden “rallied the world to the cause of democracy” and has remained a “steadfast ally” to Kyiv, said Timmons, who in March 2022 led the NAM Board in supporting a resolution denouncing Russia’s incursion and standing with the Ukrainian people.
Despite disagreement: Although manufacturers and the current administration have not always seen eye to eye on policy, “the administration has been sure to seek out manufacturers’ input, and that is the approach we would want to see from any president—an open door and a listening ear.”
What’s next: Timmons urged manufacturers to stay focused on the goal that unites all Americans: commitment to the good of the nation.
- “As he concluded his inaugural address, President Biden encouraged all of us, saying, ‘So, with purpose and resolve we turn to the tasks of our time—sustained by faith, driven by conviction and devoted to one another and to this country we love with all our hearts.’ May we continue moving forward in that spirit today.”
