U.S. Steel to Invest $3 Billion in Pennsylvania Hot Strip Mill

U.S. Steel will invest nearly $3 billion in a hot strip mill at the company’s Mon Valley plant near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, owner Nippon Steel said last week (The Wall Street Journal, subscription).
The upgrades: “[T]he investment will replace aging equipment with modern steelmaking technology, increasing annual production capacity to about 3.5 million tons from 2.2 million tons. The move also aims to expand the range of steels that U.S. Steel can produce.”
- Nippon Steel has pledged to invest $11 billion in U.S. Steel by 2028 (Reuters, subscription).
- The new equipment is expected to begin operating in the second half of 2029.
Why it’s important: U.S. Steel says the project will strengthen domestic steelmaking capacity while benefitting local and state economies (WPXI).
- The upgraded facility will support 5,100 to 6,300 jobs across Pennsylvania, according to a Parker Strategy Group study.
- “The study also estimates [that] the project will generate between $46 million and $58 million in state and local tax revenue over three years, alongside up to $1.7 billion in total economic impact.”
The NAM says: In a social media post congratulating U.S. Steel on the investment, the NAM highlighted the expected production capacity increase and said the project will “modernize steelmaking operations and strengthen America’s domestic steelmaking capabilities.”
