Technology Foundry SkyWater Launches Semiconductor Supplier
Semiconductor manufacturer SkyWater has launched a business unit dedicated to semiconductor process development, integration and manufacturing, the company announced this week (Quantum Insider).
What’s going on: The new division, SkyWater Quantum Solutions, will operate under a technology-as-a-service model and aims to bring “together SkyWater’s semiconductor process development and manufacturing capabilities” with the aim of helping customers accelerate time to market.
- SkyWater’s capabilities include superconducting and quantum photonics tech, heterogeneous integration and advanced packaging.
- Dr. Mihir Bhaskar, formerly the senior vice president of research and development at IonQ and the co-founder of Lightsynq Technologies, will lead the new unit.
What it entails: Initial SkyWater Quantum Solutions offerings comprise SkyWater’s SC250 superconducting technology platform, designed for high-density circuits, and the company’s SP90 platform, which uses low-loss silicon nitride.
- These offerings integrate with heterogenous packaging capabilities, which come from IonQ’s acquisition of advanced photonic integrated circuits maker Nexus Photonics, allowing for on-chip integration of III-V materials (such as lasers and modulators) and quantum materials (Quantum Computing Report).
Why it’s important: The new SkyWater division seeks to bridge “the gap between R&D lab prototypes and scalable volume manufacturing across superconducting, photonic and hybrid hardware platforms.”
