Manufacturing Sector Expanded for 7th Straight Month

The manufacturing sector saw its seventh consecutive month of expansion—and grew at a faster pace than previously reported (ISM® Manufacturing PMI®).

The numbers: The Purchasing Managers Index grew 2.3 percentage points to 55.6% in July, the highest level since May 2022.

  • New orders also expanded for the 7th straight month and at a quicker pace, rising 0.7 percentage points e to 56.7%.
  • Meanwhile, New Export Orders moved back into expansion territory after a contraction last month, stepping up 4.5% to 53%.
  • The Imports Index reached its highest level since June of 2021, achieving its 6th straight month of expansion and also growing at a faster pace.

Employment: The Employment Index moved into expansion territory for the first time in 33 months, climbing 3.1 percentage points for a total of 52.8%.

  • Transportation equipment; computer and electronic products; and food & beverage and tobacco products all reported increased employment.

Prices: The Prices Index dropped by 1.9 percentage points in July, after falling 9.1 percentage points in June.

  • However, the index remains well inside expansion territory at 71.1%, meaning that prices grew for the 22nd straight month but at a slower pace.
