Permits Retreated While Multifamily Homes Drive Housing Starts
Building permits decreased 3.0% in June and 2.3% over the year. Permits for single-family homes in June declined 2.4% and 0.2% over the year. At the same time, permits for buildings with five or more units fell 4.9% from May and 6.3% over the year.
In June, housing starts jumped 19.0% from May and were up 3.5% over the year. Starts for single-family homes moved down 0.2% from May and 3.2% over the year. Meanwhile, starts for buildings with five or more units surged 76.3% over the month and 19.3% over the year.
Housing completions increased 3.3% over the month and 1.5% over the year. Single-family home completions rose 6.6% from May and 5.5% from June 2025. At the same time, completions for buildings with five or more units fell 3.5% over the month and 5.1% from one year ago.
