U.S. Battery Storage Capacity Soars

Utility-scale battery storage capacity in the U.S. has grown by an average of 70% annually over the past three years (U.S. Energy Information Administration).

What’s going on: “By the end of 2025, the U.S. power system had operational battery storage capacity of 43.6 gigawatts (GW). During the first six months of 2026, operators added another 8.3 GW of battery storage capacity, reaching nearly 52 GW of nameplate battery storage capacity.”

• Operators expect to bring another 54 GW of battery storage online over the next two-and-a-half years.
• Another 14 GW is slated to come online during the remainder of 2026.

Where it’s growing most: Solar photovoltaic (PV) plants have the biggest battery storage capacity units.

• Plans for the Bellefield Solar and Energy Storage Farm in Southern California, which started operations last December, include a doubling of the facility’s PV and storage capacity, and for that new capacity to go online by November.
• If those goals are reached, Bellefield will become the largest power storage facility in the U.S.
