Mitsubishi to Invest $490 Million to Expand Savannah Plant

Mitsubishi Power Americas will invest $490 million to expand its manufacturing facility near Savannah, Georgia, marking the company’s largest investment to date (Power Engineering).
The details: The investment in Savannah Machinery Works will more than double the plant’s manufacturing footprint and create more than 220 jobs, while expanding its “manufacturing capabilities for advanced-class gas turbines, steam turbines and other power generation equipment.”
- The investment will fund advanced manufacturing technologies, additional machining capacity and improvements to production efficiency and material handling.
- In addition, Mitsubishi and the Savanah Economic Development Authority signed an expansion framework agreement to formalize the company’s growth in the area.
Why it matters: Large-frame gas turbines are in high demand as data centers and manufacturers require increasing amounts of electricity.
- “The expanded facility will accelerate Mitsubishi Power’s ability to meet unprecedented power generation needs, with one location that combines advanced manufacturing, a skilled regional workforce and shipping, with port and rail access at the intersection of I-95 and I-16,” Mitsubishi said in a press release.
A larger strategy: Mitsubishi also plans to expand its operations at other locations, including its power generation services headquarters in Orlando, Florida, and its planned new corporate headquarters in Lake Mary, Florida.
