Manufacturers Step Up Ads Urging Action on Permitting Reform

This week, the NAM is redoubling its push to make permitting reform a reality, expanding its advocacy with a new ad urging Congress to advance the newly introduced Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act, the bipartisan permitting reform bill unveiled by Senate leaders last week.
- “Our competitiveness is on the line,” the NAM says in the ad. “America can’t wait. Tell Congress to cut the red tape and speed up permitting. Because when manufacturing wins, America wins.”
Getting the word out: “The initial five-figure buy is running on YouTube and streaming platforms like Hulu, Disney+, Peacock, Roku and Tubi,” Axios reported in an exclusive (subscription) yesterday morning.
- POLITICO’s Morning Energy (subscription) also highlighted the NAM’s permitting push today, noting “[the] NAM has been a leading business voice for a permitting overhaul for years, and has run a number of advertising campaigns on the topic.”
A quick recap: A bipartisan group of senators released the legislation last week, but the votes are slated to happen after the midterms. As NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons said last week:
- “Costly, duplicative permitting delays cost manufacturers $8 billion annually, limiting manufacturers’ ability to hire new workers, build and expand their operations. Removing these barriers would unlock greater investment and growth.”
- “We urge Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to act and for all senators to advance critical permitting reforms—and once the Senate acts, for the House to move expeditiously to get this legislation across the finish line.”
- “Manufacturers need a faster, more predictable and more cost-effective permitting process to get shovels in the ground, create jobs and strengthen manufacturing in America.”
ICYMI: This is the latest in the NAM’s broader advertising push on permitting and infrastructure. The NAM recently launched a separate ad calling on policymakers to put infrastructure and permitting reform “in the fast lane.” The ad aired on 535 News and was covered by Axios.
Get involved: To help move this legislation forward, consider contacting your senators to share how comprehensive permitting reform will benefit your company in their state.
