Hydro Post-Recycled Alloy to Be Used in New Cadillac EV Bumpers

General Motors’ Cadillac OPTIQ electric vehicle will include a front bumper system made with a low-carbon aluminum alloy composed mostly of recycled metal (Hydro.com).
What’s going on: The collaboration will be one of the first American implementations of Hydro CIRCAL, which is composed of at least 75% post-consumer scrap metal, according to the Norwegian company.
- Michigan-based automotive supply company Shape Corp. will engineer and construct the bumper system to the vehicle maker’s specifications.
- The system will then be integrated into the OPTIQ platform.
Why it’s important: “Produced at Hydro’s newest recycling facility in Cassopolis, Michigan, Hydro CIRCAL helps GM increase material circularity and lower the embedded carbon footprint of a safety‑critical component before the vehicle ever leaves the manufacturing site.”
- The bumper system has a carbon footprint of 1.5 CO₂e/kg aluminum or less while meeting GM requirements “for strength, energy absorption, corrosion resistance and formability.”
