Volvo Group, Amazon Team Up on Electric Rigs
Volvo Group’s all-electric big rigs will soon be hauling Amazon packages (Los Angeles Times, subscription).
What’s going on: The online retailer “is rolling out 50 all-electric big rigs in Southern California, eight of them out of the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.”
- California issued a ban last year, to begin in 2035, on the sale of new diesel trucks. It mandated a move to zero-emission garbage trucks, big rigs, delivery trucks and additional medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.
Why it’s important: “The batteries in the big rig tractors, manufactured by Volvo Group, can travel up to 275 miles before a recharge” with no emissions.
- The trucks will transport shipping containers from the two ports to Amazon’s freight center in Santa Fe Springs, California. From there, goods will be shipped to distribution centers and airports and then to delivery stations, where vans will pick them up for delivery to customers.
