Trump Accepts Nomination
Donald Trump formally accepted the GOP nomination for president on Thursday night (NBC News).
What’s going on: In a speech that closed out the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the former president made multiple references to the assassination attempt he survived last weekend, a shooting that claimed one life and injured three people, including Trump.
- “The amazing thing is that prior to the shot, if I had not moved my head at the very last instant, the assassin’s bullet would have perfectly hit its mark,” he said. “And I would not be with you tonight. … We unite this evening more determined than ever.”
Policy talk: Trump used part of the second half of his address to discuss his platform, including the following:
- The economy: He pledged to “end the devastating inflation crisis immediately [and] bring down interest rates.”
- Immigration: Trump vowed to “clos[e] the border” and finish building the border wall system started under his presidency.
- Energy: He promised to make the U.S. not just “energy independent … [but] energy dominant,” capable of “supply[ing] not only ourselves, but … the rest of the world.”
On manufacturing: The 45th president, who doubled down on his controversial tariff plan and defended the 2017 tax cuts, made the case that he would reduce the cost of manufacturing in the U.S. and bring more jobs to the sector.
