The rapid growth of artificial intelligence represents a tremendous opportunity for manufacturers, and manufacturers support commonsense guardrails on the technology, the NAM told the White House Office of Management and Budget this week. 

What’s going on: AI enables “manufacturers to strengthen their lead in innovating new technologies and realizing efficiencies that can boost our industry’s competitiveness,” NAM Director of Domestic Policy Julia Bogue said in response to an OMB request for public comment on the draft memorandum “Advancing Governance, Innovation and Risk Management for Agency Use of Artificial Intelligence.”

• “It also provides the means for the sector to develop products and processes that increase safety and improve people’s quality of life.”
• In late October, President Biden signed an executive order aimed at bolstering AI safety and security.

What should happen: To ensure “the responsible development” of AI technologies, Bogue said, the federal government should do several things:

• Allow its regulations to be informed by industry guidance.
• Ensure rule cohesion and coordination across departments and agencies.
• Undertake “[r]egular communication and information sharing” with the private sector
• Implement regulation “that does not hinder competitiveness and is indexed to the nature of the risk.”

What’s next: The NAM continues to track and provide comment on the various requests for information born from the AI executive order.
