Timmons on “Zero-for-Zero” Tariff Negotiations

“The good news is the president says that he is going to be focusing on getting 90 different deals done in the next 90 days. Manufacturers need to see that progress that hopefully will be made as those deals are cut and…we want to see countries saying, ‘zero tariffs for our products,’ so that hopefully we can say, ‘zero tariffs for their products,’ coming into our country as well.”

“I think that we all have to realize we’re in a global economy right now…And look, I want to see more manufacturing investment and jobs here because I represent manufacturers in America…The more we make here, the more we can sell abroad. But not everything, unfortunately, can be made here, but we want to make as much as we can here in the United States. There’s no question about that.”

Timmons on the Need for a Comprehensive Manufacturing Strategy

“It’s really a manufacturing strategy, a comprehensive manufacturing strategy, that we need. So that starts first with the 2017 tax reforms that need to be renewed by Congress. We’re still waiting for them to act on that. It also involves the President’s focus on regulatory rebalancing and making sure that it doesn’t cost every manufacturer in this country $50,000 per employee per year just to comply with those regulations…the cost of compliance for all regulations in this country is $3 trillion.”
