How Americans Are Traveling for Memorial Day Weekend

Americans love to go away for Memorial Day weekend—and they rely on our country’s infrastructure to get there. So how are they getting around?

By car: Of the 45 million Americans whom the AAA predicts will travel this weekend (a new record), a full 39.1 million will travel by car.

By plane: The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen 18.3 million people at airports around the country this Memorial Day weekend.

By other means: Another 2.2 million people will travel by bus, train or cruise—with Alaska cruises proving particularly popular.

The destinations: Based on the AAA’s booking data, the top five domestic destinations for travel are Orlando, Florida; Seattle, Washington; New York, New York; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Miami, Florida.

The infrastructure angle: All of these travelers will use America’s congested, aging roads, bridges, ports and other infrastructure to get to their holiday destinations and enjoy the first unofficial start of summer.

  • The NAM wishes everyone traveling safe and smooth travels this holiday weekend—and thanks the policymakers working to expand and modernize our nation’s infrastructure so families and businesses can move more safely, efficiently and reliably for years to come.
