Amazon, Wiwynn Undertake $1.6 Billion Texas Scale-Up, Creating 1,000 Jobs
Amazon and Taiwanese cloud infrastructure company Wiwynn are undertaking a massive build-out of Wiwynn’s U.S. manufacturing footprint (Stocktwits).
What’s going on: The expansion of an existing site in Socorro, Texas—Wiwynn’s first U.S. manufacturing operation—will take Wiwynn’s total investment in the facility to more than $1.6 billion, the companies announced last week.
- Wiwynn makes and integrates servers and racks for Amazon’s data center infrastructure.
- The investment and its buildout are “expected to create nearly 1,000 new advanced manufacturing jobs by the end of 2027.”
Supply chain move: The Texas facility expansion is part of a larger Amazon effort to strengthen the company’s supply chain by moving custom hardware manufacturing to the U.S. and beefing up domestic capacity for infrastructure needs.
Why it’s important: Employment at the expanded site is slated to exceed 2,500 in 2027 and “reach 4,000 at full capacity” across manufacturing, engineering, automation, testing maintenance and production and supply chain operations (Seeking Alpha).
- “By investing in U.S.-produced server racks, we’re helping to strengthen the domestic supply chain and boost U.S. manufacturing capacity,” Amazon posted to X last week.
The broader impact: Amazon’s $100-billion-plus investment in Texas since 2010 has created over 86,000 jobs statewide, according to Gary Szilagyi, vice president of Annapurna Labs at Amazon. Those investments also support an estimated 90,000 indirect jobs across Texas in industries including construction, logistics and retail.
