New Housing Construction Declines in August
Building permits decreased 2.7% in August but rose 3.5% over the year. Permits for single-family homes in August declined 1.8% but increased 1.3% over the year. At the same time, permits for buildings with five or more units fell 3.1% from July but jumped 9.4% over the year.
In August, housing starts declined 2.6% from July and 1.2% over the year. Starts for single-family homes rose 7.6% from July and 5.2% over the year. Meanwhile, starts for buildings with five or more units plummeted 22.5% over the month and 15.5% over the year.
Housing completions fell 11.9% over the month and 27.1% over the year. Single-family completions dropped 10.4% from July and 22.9% from August 2025. At the same time, completions for buildings with five or more units declined 15.9% over the month and plunged 35.7% from one year ago.
