Five pipeline projects will increase the capacity to move natural gas from the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico to manufacturers and customers around the country, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration .

• These include four newly publicized projects and one under-construction endeavor. Three of the four just-announced undertakings are capacity expansions, and one is a new pipeline.

What’s happening: The five ventures stand to significantly increase the amount of natural gas output from the basin.

• “If completed as planned, these five projects together would increase takeaway capacity out of the Permian Basin by a combined 4.18 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) over the next two years.”

Expansion details: The capacity expansions of extant pipelines are:

• The Gulf Coast Express Pipeline Expansion, which is slated for operation in December 2023;
• The Permian Highway Pipeline Expansion, set to start operation in November 2023; and
• Whistler Pipeline Capacity Expansion, which is expected to begin service in September 2023.

The new project: The new pipeline, the Matterhorn Express, is set to transport natural gas through nearly 500 miles of pipeline within Texas.

Why it’s important: Greater takeaway capacity will bolster supply for manufacturers, electricity generation and exports to support allies.

• “Now more than ever we see not only the importance of increasing domestic energy production, but also the imperative to expand the critical infrastructure that delivers that energy to manufacturers and their families around the country—and that’s just as true for natural gas as it is for renewables, nuclear or other energy sources,” said NAM Vice President of Energy and Resources Policy Rachel Jones.
• “To do this, we must continue to streamline permitting, reduce abusive litigation and provide predictable regulations that keep manufacturers competitive.”
