Job Openings Remain Steady
In June, the number of job openings remained steady at 8.2 million, a decrease of 941,000 from the previous year. Job openings increased in accommodation and food services (+120,000) and state and local government, excluding education (+94,000), while they decreased in durable goods manufacturing (-88,000) and the federal government (-62,000). The job openings rate remained steady at 4.9%, down from 5.5% in June 2023. The manufacturing job openings rate fell from 4.3% last month to 3.6% this month. The rate for durable goods manufacturing fell from 4.8% to 3.8%, while it declined from 3.5% to 3.3% for nondurable goods.
The number of hires remained largely unchanged at 5.3 million, down 554,000 hires from the previous year, with the hires rate holding at 3.4%. The hires rate for manufacturing remained steady at 2.7%. Durable goods ticked down to 2.5%, but nondurable goods inched up to 3%.
Total separations were stable at 5.1 million, a decrease of 544,000 from the previous year. The total separations rate remained at 3.2%. Within that, quits remained steady at 3.3 million, a decline of 434,000 over the past year, and layoffs and discharges held at 1.5 million, with the rate dropping to 0.9%. Other separations remained little changed at 314,000.
