Inflation Rose Slightly in May
The consumer price index ticked up 0.1% in May, after a 0.2% increase in April (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
- Over the past 12 months, the index rose 2.4% before seasonal adjustment. For the year ending in April, the index had increased 2.3%.
The details: A rise in shelter prices, up 0.3%, was the primary cause behind May’s increase, according to BLS.
- The food index also rose 0.3%, while the energy index fell 1% due to a decline in gas prices.
- Without food and energy prices, the index rose only 0.1% in May, following a 0.2% uptick in April.
The goods: Prices for medical care, motor vehicle insurance, household furnishings and operations, personal care and education increased over the month.
- Prices for airline fares, used cars and trucks, new vehicles and apparel were among those that decreased last month.
