Gulf Coast to Get First LNG Bunker Fueling Station

The Galveston LNG Bunker Port project has received its final permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Coast Guard and will become the first liquefied natural gas marine bunker port on the Gulf Coast (gCaptain).

The port: “Located strategically on the Texas City Ship Channel, the facility will serve LNG-fueled vessels in the Houston–Galveston region through fuel barge operations. The terminal’s position provides optimal access to major maritime hubs including Port Houston, the Port of Galveston and the Port of Texas City.”

  • It will have a total capacity of 720,000 gallons per day, thanks to two enormous storage tanks with a capacity of 3 million gallons each.

The big picture: This project represents a leap forward in the use of LNG, which the NAM has long argued is a hugely important source of energy and fuel for the U.S. economy, as well as a crucial export commodity that helps the U.S. support its allies.

  • “The facility will serve the growing demand for LNG as a marine fuel, with operations projected to commence in the second half of 2027.”
