DOE Launches Wind Turbine Recycling Initiative
There’s a new funding opportunity available from the Department of Energy’s Wind Energy Technologies Office (WindInsider).
What’s going on: The WETO on Wednesday announced an investment of up to $20 million from the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law “to enhance the recyclability and sustainability of wind turbine technologies.”
Why it’s happening: Although more than “90% of a wind turbine’s mass can currently be economically recycled, the remaining components—primarily fiber-reinforced composites and metallic parts with critical materials—pose significant challenges.”
Who should apply: Funding will go to projects with innovations that “demonstrate the ability to economically and sustainably recycle wind turbine materials at a scale relevant to the domestic wind energy industry,” according to the DOE.
- Undertakings seeking funds should also “show the sustainability and recyclability advantages offered by the innovation and de-risk the innovation for commercialization,” which could include cost reduction, reliability, improved sustainability and more.
