DOE Approves LNG Export Extension
The Energy Department extended a permit for a key liquefied natural gas export project (Bloomberg News, subscription).
What’s going on: Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Wednesday the Energy Department had “approved a request from Golden Pass LNG, a Texas project co-owned by QatarEnergy LNG and Exxon Mobil Corp., to extend the deadline to put the terminal in service to November 30, 2029. Previously, Golden Pass was required under its license to start up by November 30, 2026.”
- The decision comes following Secretary Wright’s promise to approve LNG projects that have been waiting in line for years.
- It also follows President Trump’s lifting of the moratorium on LNG export permits, put in place by the previous administration.
What’s next: The companies are aiming for a late 2025 production start at Golden Pass, and they plan to begin exporting the LNG exporting the LNG shortly thereafter, according to Reuters (subscription).
- Once operational, Golden Pass will be the ninth-largest export terminal in the U.S. and will have export capacity of up to 2.37 billion cubic feet of LNG per day.
