China-Linked Cyberattacks Hit U.S. Internet Providers

Hackers with ties to the Chinese government have breached several U.S. internet service providers in the past few months (The Wall Street Journal, subscription).

What’s going on: In “[t]he hacking campaign, called Salt Typhoon by investigators … the actors linked to China burrowed into America’s broadband networks. In this type of intrusion, bad actors aim to establish a foothold within the infrastructure of cable and broadband providers that would allow them to access data stored by telecommunications companies or launch a damaging cyberattack.”

  • The discovery is the latest in a series of cyberattacks the U.S. has connected to China in recent years.
  • Last week, the U.S. disrupted more than 200,000 routers, cameras and other connected devices being used by the China-based hacking group Flax Typhoon.

A “massive threat”: “The cyberthreat posed by the Chinese government is massive,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray earlier this year.

  • And “[o]fficials have repeatedly said that what the private sector and government agencies know about Chinese intrusions into critical infrastructure is likely the ‘tip of the iceberg.’”
