Burgum Expands Domestic Energy Production

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum intends to unlock America’s energy potential (POLITICO Pro GREENWIRE, subscription).

What’s going on: On Monday, Burgum signed six secretarial orders that aim to “unleash the full energy potential of public lands in Alaska, establish the U.S. as a leader in extracting minerals other than oil and gas—such as critical minerals—and ‘eliminate harmful, coercive climate policies’ from the Biden era.”

The details: The orders are as follows:

  • Addressing the National Energy Emergency: Seeks to meet the need for “a reliable, diversified, growing and affordable supply of energy,” which includes critical minerals
  • Unleashing American Energy: In line with the “Unleashing American Energy” executive order signed by President Trump on Day One, seeks to “encourage energy exploration and production on federal lands and waters to meet the needs of our citizens and solidify the United States as a global energy leader and achieve energy dominance”
  • Delivering Emergency Price Relief for American Families and Defeating the Cost-of-Living Crisis: Mandates that the Interior Department take actions to reduce living costs for U.S. families
  • Announcing President Trump’s Revocation of Former Outer Continental Shelf Withdrawals: Requires “immediate compliance” with Trump’s revocations of the Biden administration withdrawal of Outer Continental Shelf oil-and-gas leasing
  • Achieving Prosperity Through Deregulation: Orders Interior Department to support President Trump’s agenda of deregulation
  • Unleashing Alaska’s Extraordinary Resource Potential: Directs Interior Department “to take all necessary steps to unleash the State of Alaska’s abundant and largely untapped supply of natural resources”

Why it’s important: “Burgum’s first signatures suggest he is keenly focused on unraveling the legacy of the Biden administration on public lands, from revising offshore oil leasing schedules to rewriting plans to protect the greater sage grouse, a Western bird whose fragmented habitat often overlaps with oil and gas fields,” GREENWIRE reports.

The NAM’s view: “Expanding domestic energy production is essential to strengthening manufacturing competitiveness and securing America’s economic future,” said NAM Executive Vice President Erin Streeter.

  • “The actions taken by Secretary Burgum align with manufacturers’ priorities—unlocking energy resources, expanding critical mineral production and ensuring a reliable, affordable energy supply. A strong, all-of-the-above energy strategy will power innovation, drive job creation and make America energy dominant.”
