Biden Administration to U.S. Companies: Boost Cybersecurity

In his most urgent warning yet, President Biden on Monday told American companies to strengthen their cybersecurity measures following intelligence reports that indicate Russia is seeking retaliation for U.S. economic sanctions, according to POLITICO Pro (subscription) and CNBC.

Means of retaliation: “‘The more Putin’s back is against the wall, the greater the severity of the tactics he may employ … one of the tools he’s most likely to use in my view, in our view, is cyberattacks,’ Biden said on Monday,” according to POLITICO Pro. “‘The magnitude of Russia’s cyber capacity is fairly consequential, and it’s coming,’ he continued.”

  • Deputy National Security Adviser for Cyber and Emerging Technology Anne Neuberger said the Russian government was “eyeing U.S. critical infrastructure” but did not cite any specifics, according to POLITICO Pro.

Forewarned is forearmed: Federal agencies recently gathered more than 100 U.S. companies to share information on the new intelligence, according to POLITICO Pro.

  • Neuberger “said the government gave companies tools to strengthen cybersecurity and security advisories on what the government is seeing.”
  • The Department of Energy held a classified briefing last Wednesday with industry leaders who hold a top-secret security clearance to discuss the Russian cyberattack threat, according to a source familiar with the meetings.

“Clear and present danger”: “Tom Kellermann, the head of cybersecurity strategy at VMware, said Monday that ‘there is a clear and present danger’ to the U.S. given efforts by Russian-linked cyber threat groups in recent months. ‘Destructive cyberattacks are imminent,’ he said,” according to POLITICO Pro.

Just the facts: The White House Monday also put out a fact sheet listing ways companies can protect themselves against cyberattacks.

  • President Biden said the administration will “continue to use every tool to deter, disrupt and if necessary, respond to cyberattacks against critical infrastructure,” according to POLITICO Pro.
