AI Could Create “Haves,” “Have-Nots”
The increasing sophistication of artificial intelligence systems could create a separation between “haves” and “have-nots,” with some companies boasting better cyber protection than others, The Wall Street Journal (subscription) reports.
What’s going on: “Security chiefs and vendors say AI systems, and in particular generative AI, may offer significant benefits for defending against hacks. … Yet, experts worry that the promise of AI won’t be available for everyone, and especially those without deep pockets.”
A double-edged sword: While AI can help security professionals, it’s also helping bad actors. For example, hackers now use it to produce tailored, polished phishing emails within minutes.
- And “while companies can scan for vulnerabilities in software using AI, so too can hackers.”
What it could mean: Smaller businesses, such as those using outdated operating systems on their computers, might be at greater risk of AI-aided hacking.
What’s being done: “The promise and peril of AI is such that the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Monday published a strategy outlining how it will use AI, and how it will seek to protect critical infrastructure from AI-enabled hacks.”
