Trump Announces U.S. Withdrawal from International Climate Treaty

President Trump released a memo to all federal agencies yesterday evening, titled “Withdrawing the United States from International Organizations, Conventions and Treaties That Are Contrary to the Interests of the United States.”

  • Most prominent among the 35 non-U.N. groups and 31 U.N. entities listed in the memo is the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change—the deal under which the Paris Agreement operates. The U.S. joined the UNFCCC in 1992 under President George H.W. Bush.
  • Following the review of the U.S.’s international commitments pursuant to Executive Order 14199, the president determined that “it is contrary to the interests of the United States to remain a member of, participate in or otherwise provide support to” the UNFCCC and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the other entities, the memo said.
