Dimon: “Business leaders need to step up, and speak up”

U.S. business leaders need to step up to guide the country through turbulent times, JPMorgan Chase CEO and Chairman Jamie Dimon said this week (Axios ).

What’s going on: Dimon acknowledged to Axios that CEOs haven’t done enough.

  • “We in business made a mistake in not getting more involved earlier,” Dimon said.
  • “I do not think the problems of society will be fixed by politicians alone. … There’s more geopolitical risk than we’ve seen since World War II.”
  • On broken policies, Dimon said, “the political issues are tough, but the actual policy could be fixed [but] it’ll never be fixed if you don’t acknowledge there’s a problem.”

The risks we face: Artificial intelligence is likely to “ increase the likelihood of a large-scale cyberattack,” Dimon said. His other concerns include

  • China, Russia, an escalation of the Iran war, “rogue AI,” economic uncertainty, political dysfunction and nuclear weapons.

However … Dimon is optimistic about the future—as long as fixes are forthcoming.

  • “We still have the most prosperous nation the world’s ever seen [and] the best military,” he said. “We’re in a great position—and we have issues. … You can’t fix problems when you don’t acknowledge them.”
